Controls on Photosynthesis and Sugar Production in C3 and C4 Plants: a Modeling Approach

چکیده

Photosynthesis is a rather complicated process (Figure 1). Along the pathway, there are a series of energy transformations, redox reactions, and entry and exit points, any of which could influence the rate of the overall process. However, physiological measurements yield surprisingly simple relationships among a few environmental factors such as light and CO2 availability and overall rates of photosynthesis measured in the short-term. How do these variables control photosynthesis? You will investigate these mechanisms in two ways. Today, you will use STELLA to simulate the process of photosynthesis to better understand how different mechanisms work together to control the photosynthetic process. In lab next week, you will explore the relationship between carbon dioxide concentration and photosynthesis in two species that differed in their CO2 uptake pathways (C-3 and C-4 plants).

Carbon isotope discrimination as a diagnostic tool for C4 photosynthesis in C3-C4 intermediate species

The presence and activity of the C4 cycle in C3-C4 intermediate species have proven difficult to analyze, especially when such activity is low. This study proposes a strategy to detect C4 activity and estimate its contribution to overall photosynthesis in intermediate plants, by using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) coupled to gas exchange systems to simultaneously measure t...

Environmental regulation of C(3) and C(4) differentiation in the amphibious sedge Eleocharis vivipara.

The biochemical and physiological characteristics of C4 photosynthesis have been researched and clarified in detail. We now know that the differentiation of two cell types, mesophyll cells (MC) and bundle sheath cells (BSC), is required for efficient C4 photosynthesis. Thus, the leaves of C4 plants have more complicated structural and functional features than those of C3 plants (Hatch, 1999; Ka...

Regulation of Photosynthesis in C3 and C4 Plants: A Molecular Approach.

Most plants use the C3 pathway of photosynthesis, also called the photosynthetic carbon reduction cycle (PCR), shown in Figure 1A. C3 plants have a single chloroplast type that performs all of the reactions that convert light energy into the chemical energy that is used to fix COp and to synthesize the reduced carbon compounds upon which all life depends. Ribulose-i ,5-bisphosphate carboxylasel...

Chalcone-based Selective Inhibitors of a C4 Plant Key Enzyme as Novel Potential Herbicides

Weeds are a challenge for global food production due to their rapidly evolving resistance against herbicides. We have identified chalcones as selective inhibitors of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC), a key enzyme for carbon fixation and biomass increase in the C4 photosynthetic pathway of many of the world's most damaging weeds. In contrast, many of the most important crop plants use C3 p...
